MÚK – these three letters, standing for MÁRCIUSBAN ÚJRA KEZDJÜK (we will start again in March), kept the Kádár regime in fear until it collapsed in 1989, but has been ingrained in the Hungarian mindset so much that even these days people look forward to March 15 with contained anticipation that unrest may occur.

Travelling Exhibition Of Hungarian Forced Labourers In Soviet Union Opens

A travelling exhibition installed in a train wagon was opened at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station. It pays tribute to Hungarians deported to Soviet forced labour camps in late 1944 and during the first half of 1945. The exhibition forms part of an anniversary programme series running until early 2017.

2015 brought many changes to Hungary’s social welfare system. From March 2015 needy families now receive far less social assistance than before. A number of programs were eliminated. In their place, local governments can offer so-called “settlement assistance”, but who receives how much is now entirely left up to the local governments.

An 8 tonne steel sculpture by renowned French contemporary artist Bernar Venet was unveiled in central Budapest. Arcs in Disorder can be viewed in March 15 Square near Elizabeth Bridge. The artist told news agency MTI at the unveiling that he originally planned to display Arcs in southern France, but decided on Budapest instead, given the “prominent” spot on offer.
