A proposed one-off tax on tobacco companies could raise the price of cigarettes by 70-80 forints (EUR 0.25) per pack, daily Népszabadság said on Friday, citing an official from British American Tobacco (BAT). Attila Tóth, who handles BAT’s relations with the government, told the paper that the sector had not generated “extra profit” for years.

The black market for cigarettes in Hungary has grown to 12.1% of total sales, market research company GfK Hungária said. A little more than a year ago, GfK Hungária said illegal sales of cigarettes accounted for 7.7% of total turnover. In its latest release, the market researcher said the rate had reached 11.8% by the end of last year, but noted there had been “restructuring” on the market.
