Heat Alert This Week: Temperatures Near 40°C Expected in Hungary
Hungary is in for an intense heatwave this week. From midweek, the days will get progressively hotter, with highs reaching up to 39°C on Friday and Saturday. Early in the week, a brisk wind in many areas will bring some relief, but in the second half of the week, conditions will meet the criteria for an official heat alert.

The hot weather is set to continue into next week. On Monday, winds will still be lively – at times strong – and in some regions, the maximum temperature will stay below 30°C. After that, the heat will intensify, with afternoon highs of up to 39°C possible in the latter part of the week. The weekend may bring stronger winds and an increased chance of showers or thunderstorms, but the heat will persist, according to the HungaroMet forecast.

Detailed Forecast

Monday
– Clear skies and dry conditions are expected across the country. Winds from the north and northeast will be moderate to strong, especially in eastern Hungary. Highs will range between 27°C and 33°C.

Tuesday – Another clear, dry day, with light to moderate easterly winds. Morning lows will be between 10°C and 17°C, but in some cooler spots, temperatures may dip below 10°C. Afternoon highs will reach 29°C to 34°C.

Wednesday – Sunny and dry, with moderate easterly winds, becoming stronger near Sopron. Morning temperatures will generally be 11°C to 17°C, cooler in sheltered valleys and warmer near lakes and at higher altitudes. Highs will be between 31°C and 36°C.

Thursday – Mostly sunny, with occasional thin high cloud. No rain is expected. Light to moderate southeast to east winds. Morning lows will be 13°C to 18°C, rising to 33°C to 38°C in the afternoon.

Friday – Predominantly sunny with light winds. Morning lows will be around 14°C to 19°C, with afternoon highs between 33°C and 39°C.

Saturday – Mostly sunny, with some scattered cloud. A few showers or thunderstorms may develop in the northwest and north. Winds will shift to the northwest and strengthen in many areas. Nighttime temperatures will be 15°C to 23°C, with daytime highs from 32°C to 39°C.

Sunday – Plenty of sunshine with some cloud cover. Showers or thunderstorms are possible in some areas. Northerly winds will be moderate to strong. Lows will be 14°C to 22°C, highs between 29°C and 38°C.

The following tips have been issued:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day—don’t wait until you feel thirsty! Replenish minerals regularly.

  • Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, especially during the hottest part of the day, as they increase the risk of dehydration.

  • Look out for one another: in crowded, unshaded areas, symptoms of heat-related illness can appear quickly — don’t ignore warning signs.

  • Avoid bringing perishable food to festivals or the beach unless proper refrigeration is available — opt for safer alternatives.

  • Refrain from outdoor sports or garden work during peak heat hours.

  • If you’re travelling, ensure your car’s air conditioning is working, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

  • If you see a child or animal left in a car in the sun, call emergency services immediately on 112.

Nationwide Fire Ban in Effect

Due to high daytime temperatures and the ongoing lack of rainfall, a nationwide ban on lighting fires in forests and their surroundings comes into force from Sunday, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has announced. The measure is being implemented in agreement with the National Directorate General for Disaster Management.

Authorities stress that preventing wildfires depends greatly on public awareness and responsibility, as most forest fires are caused by human negligence – for example, by a discarded cigarette.

During the ban, it is strictly prohibited to light fires in forests, wooded areas, and within 200 metres of them.

Up-to-date information on the fire ban and fire safety regulations can be found on the maps at www.erdotuz.hu and www.katasztrofavedelem.hu.

The authorities urge everyone to comply with the ban, as responsible behaviour can prevent devastating environmental and material damage. As they note, “Just one second of carelessness can lead to firefighting operations lasting hundreds of hours, and the restoration of forests that can take a hundred years.”
