Gyula Molnár, former head of the Socialist Party’s Budapest chapter, was elected as the party’s new chairman at its weekend congress. Molnár was elected in the second round of voting, defeating former leader József Tóbiás, after none of the four candidates running for the party’s top spot were able to secure a majority in the first round.

British voters have the right to express their views on their country’s European Union membership, but Hungary wants to make clear that it is “honoured” to be Britain’s partner in the bloc, government office chief János Lázár said at a regular news briefing. Lázár said the government will discuss and assess the UK’s referendum on EU membership in detail at a cabinet meeting on Friday.

The Municipal Court sentenced a man for soliciting payment from a US company based in Hungary in return for using his influence to lower the VAT rate on cooking oil. In the non-binding ruling, the man was handed a two-year prison sentence suspended for three years. The charges were brought in December last year.
