Hungary’s middle classes have thinned during the period of 2001 to 2011, according to a new Central Statistical Office (KSH) study. Ákos Huszár, one of the study’s editors, said data revealed that the share of highprestige professionals, top executives and middle management in the whole population had risen while so had the share of unskilled workers and those at the brim of society.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised its projection for economic growth in Hungary this year to 2.7% from 2.3% predicted last October. In its World Economic Outlook published Tuesday, the Fund said economic growth remained strong in Hungary but it is expected to decline this year on account of lower investment growth and less supportive fiscal conditions.

The economy ministry’s draft for next year’s state budget will be submitted to the government at its next session, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told public radio. The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has launched an investigation against radical nationalist Jobbik MEP Béla Kovács and former MEP Csanád Szegedi on suspicion of abuse of funds and fraud, the news portal Origo reported. OLAF suspects that the MEPs abused funds available for employing interns and assistants. They had access to a monthly 21,000 euros for that purpose, Origo said.
