Premature Birth Becoming Common In Hungary

Premature birth has become a common problem in Hungary next to high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes, business daily Világgazdaság said citing a study, which also added that Roma women were in the highest risk category. The study was prepared by researchers from the Budapest Semmelweis University analysing data about 18,000 births in four counties of northeast Hungary between 2009 and 2012.

The forint weakened to a record level against the euro for the first time this year on Tuesday afternoon. The Hungarian currency traded at 315.65 against the common European currency, compared with 315.58 on March 14. It started the day trading at 313.46 against the euro.

The forint was trading at 310.79 to the euro late Tuesday on the interbank forex market, down from 308.98 late Monday. At 308.96 to the euro early Tuesday, the forint moved between 308.77 and 311.31, a ten-day low. The Hungarian currency sank back to levels before the decision of the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) a week ago to stop its easing cycle.

The number of permits issued for new home construction rose by 17.9% to 4,009 in the first half of 2014, fresh data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show. New permits were issued for a total area of 453,000sqm, up 13.9%. The number of new home completions rose 21.8% to 3,265 in the first half of this year.

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air said on Tuesday it would suspend services to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport until midnight on July 23. “Following directions issued to US airlines by the FAA, Wizz Air has now decided to suspend its operations to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport until midnight Wednesday 23 July,” the company said.

Magyar Telekom on Thursday said it planned to cut up to 1,700 jobs over the next year and a half, under an agreement reached with trade unions. About 40% of the redundancies are expected between October 1, 2014 and March 1, 2015, MTel said.
