The opposition Socialist Party will appeal to the Constitutional Court and to the ombudsman over changes to the municipal election system in Budapest as proposed by the ruling Fidesz party. The local council of Budapest’s 5th district has sold the landmark Párizsi Udvar building near the Danube for 2.1 billion forints (EUR 6.9m) to Mellow Mood Group, which operates a luxury hotel in the neighbouring Klotild Palace. District mayor Antal Rogán said the local council lacked the several billions of forints required to renovate the building.

The two former officials, Socialist Mayor Gyula Molnár of the 11th district and Imre Lakos, his Free Democrat deputy, were accused of attempting to sell a valuable property owned by the local council to a private company without a public tender in 2006.
