Socialists Launch Local Referendum On Controversial WWII Memorial In Budapest
The opposition Socialist Party has launched a local referendum to decide on whether the local council of Budapest’s 5th district should stop construction of the controversial memorial to the victims of the 1944 German invasion. Pál Steiner, a Socialist lawmaker, told a press conference on Wednesday at the site of the construction in Szabadság Square that until the referendum is held, all building work should stop.

If, however, it goes ahead, and the citizens of the 5th district vote against the memorial, a court would validate their will, he said. Construction of a monument to victims of Hungary’s 1944 German occupation has started in central Budapest’s Szabadság Square.

The monument is scheduled to be completed by May 31, the government information centre said, referring to a government decree which states that the government considers it a priority to erect a monument to pay tribute to the victims on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Hungary’s occupation.

Originally, the government had planned to have the monument completed by March 19, but later decided to postpone construction until after the general election on April 6.

On Tuesday evening, people gathering for a flashmob demo organised by the leftist Democratic Coalition (DK) removed some of the fencing around the construction site.

The protesters entered the site and said Kaddish, the Jewish mourning prayer.
