The United States could aim for the establishment of a political party in Hungary to take the place of the defunct liberal Free Democrats (SZDSZ), House Speaker László Kövér said. It would be logical to establish a successor to SZDSZ by 2018 to ensure inclusion in a government against radical nationalist Jobbik, he told Saturday’s Magyar Hírlap.

Socialist Party leader József Tóbiás, lashing out at fellow left-wingers, declared that his party would no longer be willing to strike compromises. “The Socialist leadership has decided to no longer take part in a game of elites, will not strike bad compromises and will open to the public, to the people,” he vowed. He also branded Ferenc Gyurcsány, DK’s leader as “authoritarian”.

Hungary won twenty medals in EuroSkills, the largest European skills competition, held in Lille. Hungarian skilled workers won gold medals in joinery, information and communication technology, surface cleaning and cleaning services, and silver medals in mechatronics and woodcraft technology.

One in three Hungarians (3.3 million) are now living in poverty while the average citizen has just HUF 522 (USD 2.19) per day for food and that amount is falling, according to a recent Eurostat report. This means that the average Hungarian must make ends meet with less than HUF 65,000 (USD 272) per month.
