Hungary’s opposition E-PM alliance urged the government to scrap plans of levying a tax on internet data transfers in a statement released today. According to estimates, the government’s plans mean that every downloaded gigabyte would cost Hungarian internet service providers HUF 150, and many believe ISPs would simply pass the tax on to users.

One in three Hungarians (3.3 million) are now living in poverty while the average citizen has just HUF 522 (USD 2.19) per day for food and that amount is falling, according to a recent Eurostat report. This means that the average Hungarian must make ends meet with less than HUF 65,000 (USD 272) per month.

Hungary’s banking sector reported enormous losses totaling HUF 361 billion (USD 1.57 billion) in Q2 2014 according to data released by the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) on Friday. This was mainly due to massive provisions against losses to cover the costs of refunding clients for past charges resulting from the currency spread and higher interest rates approved without the client’s consent.
