Tourism is one of Hungary’s engines of economic growth, a sector showing a steady increase between 2010 and 2014, the head of the Hungarian Tourism company said. The number of tourists arriving from other European countries went up by 29% during the period, Péter Faragó said.

Although the number of guest nights spent by Chinese and Indian tourists in Hungary is on the rise, European guests remain the driving force of Hungary’s tourism sector, the head of the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants said. Ákos Niklai told public news channel M1 that around 80% of Hungary’s tourists come from European countries.

Tourism ties with China are expanding and will play a role in the “One Belt, One Road” project aimed at intensifying international economic relations, Economy Minister Mihaly Varga said on Wednesday. The government has prepared a list of safe countries of origin and safe third countries that includes the Western Balkans where most illegal immigrants arrive from. The list of countries deemed as safe under the asylum law includes all EU member states and four candidates for EU membership, namely Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. The fifth candidate, Turkey, does not feature on the list.

The number of guest nights spent in Hungarian hotels and guesthouses went up by an annual 3.8% to 2,247,000 in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Tourism has proven successful as one of the driving forces of the national economy: between 1 January and 31 May, 3.4 million tourists spent a total of 7.9 million guest nights at commercial accommodation establishments.
