Hundreds of people protested in favour of the rule of law outside Fidesz headquarters on Saturday afternoon to mark the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the party. Party activists hung a banner on the building, wishing protesters a happy Easter, while police turned out in large numbers.

MPs have run up more official expenses in the past three years than in the previous four years, the tabloid Blikk reported on Tuesday. The tabloid found that the ten MPs claiming the most expenses have collected at least Ft 25 million each so far and could rake in a further Ft 11-12 million before the next elections.

The Socialists will start a petition drive to have the VAT on basic foodstuffs lowered from 27% to 5%, party president Attila Mesterházy told reporters last Wednesday. Speaking after a meeting of the party executive, he said the drive is necessary because Fidesz did not support the Socialist proposal in Parliament.
