Companies involved in food or fodder production must pay by May 31 a new food safety monitoring tax that was announced only last week. The announcement was made by the National Food Chain Safety Office, a body created earlier this year from the merger of agriculture administration office MGSZH and the Hungarian Food Safety Office.

The rupture of the red sludge reservoir in Hungary has caused a localised emergency situation afflicting three villages 160 km from the capital, Budapest.
