The friendship between Hungarians and Germans has been an “unquestionable asset” for all Hungarian governments since the political regime change of 1989, Gergely Gulyás, Hungary’s deputy speaker, told a gala celebration marking the day of ethnic German communities, on Sunday.

October 23 is a day on which Hungarians should be proud, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the state commemoration of Hungary’s anti-Soviet uprising of 1956 at Budapest’s Kossuth Square in front of Parliament on Sunday. Even after 60 years, October 23 is still a day that “lifts up and cleanses us”, the prime minister said, calling the national holiday a “shared heritage” of the Hungarian people.

Significant political decisions must always take into account the will of the people and respect minority opinions, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog told a conference on Hungarian- German relations marking the 25th anniversary of Germany’s reunification. Balog said that in order to prevent the construction of even more fences in Europe, the continent must protect its borders.

Born in 1974 in Duisburg, Germany, the parents of Mr. Arisoy were ‘guest workers’ at that time, and in 1986 they went back to Turkey. In 1995 he completed the University of Marmara in Turkey, his studies were ‘German Didactic and Pedagogic’.
