Although the number of guest nights spent by Chinese and Indian tourists in Hungary is on the rise, European guests remain the driving force of Hungary’s tourism sector, the head of the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants said. The event this year is expected to draw 10% more visitors than in 2014, most of them coming from abroad, the paper said. The Budapest Grand Prix last year attracted a record number of 247,000 spectators, it said.

The number of guest nights spent in Hungarian hotels and guesthouses went up by an annual 3.8% to 2,247,000 in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Tourism has proven successful as one of the driving forces of the national economy: between 1 January and 31 May, 3.4 million tourists spent a total of 7.9 million guest nights at commercial accommodation establishments.

Property firm AEG, owned by Russian investors, has purchased the five-star Lotus Therme Hotel & Spa in Hévíz, Zala county from CIB Bank, hotel CEO Erzsébet Pusztai confirmed. The price has not been disclosed. Accent Hotel will continue the management of the 232-room facility, where room occupancy was 61.1% last year.
