Programmes begin on Kossuth tér at 8.30 a.m. Saturday morning where the national flag will be hoisted while soldiers present a military salute and army offers are inaugurated. Defence Minister István Simicskó will welcome the crowd after which President János Áder will deliver a speech.

August 20th is Hungary's National Day commemorating King Stephen, the first king of the Hungarian sand the founder of the Hungarian state. He led in the Catholicism with the protection of Rome. He was canonised and became St. Stephen on 20th August 1083. On this day the whole country celebrates with concerts, Holy Mass and fireworks.

In recent years a special cake to celebrate the country's foundation is always prepared in Hungary. The National Guild of Hungarian Confectioners selects the best recipe submitted by confectioners from all over the country. This year the jury voted the Green Gold of Őrség by Gellért Szó, G&D Cake Shop from Salgótarján, to be Hungary’s Birthday cake of 2016.

This large-scale festival is put on for the public every year on 20th August. There is an exhibition of Hungarian crafts, a water and an air parade, and a firework display. This day is also a national holiday in honour of Saint Stephen (King István I.), founder of the state of Hungary, as well as the festival of the new bread.
