Police freed ten migrants locked in a small van left abandoned by the driver on the roadside near the Hegyeshalom crossing point to Austria, a regional press spokesman said. The ten Iraqi nationals were discovered hiding in the back of the vehicle and shouting for help on Monday afternoon. The minivan carrying German plates was seized and legal proceedings were launched.

Defence Minister Csaba Hende and Interior Minister Sándor Pintér inspected construction of the fence near Tompa on the Serbian border on Friday. They affirmed that the barrier will be completed by August 31. Police detained 1,022 illegal immigrants during a single day at Hungary’s southern border with Serbia, a local police spokesman said on Sunday. A total of 991 of them were Kosovar nationals, 18 were Afghans, seven Iraqi, three Cuban, two Syrian and one a Somali national.
