The level of the Danube peaked in Budapest at 891cm at 4 a.m. Monday, exceeding the previous record of 860cm reached in 2006. There was no catastrophe at the city’s two most vulnerable sites of Batthyány tér and Margaret Island, nor anywhere else in the city, mayor István Tarlós declared at a joint press conference with the prime minister.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who stressed the role of the German car manufacturer in boosting Hungary’s importance as a regional automotive industry centre. The company’s CEO called the Győr plant one of the pillars of Audi’s growth.
