Cziffra Festival Under Way In Budapest

A classical music festival dedicated to the legendary Hungarian pianist György Cziffra that started on Tuesday will run until Sunday with performances in two venues. The festival opened in Budapest’s MOM Cultural Centre with the debut concert of the CZF Chamber Orchestra led by young virtuoso violinist Ernő Kállai, with works by Grieg, Mozart and Liszt.

Chanteuse Veronika Harcsa and guitarist Bálint Gyémánt were once classmates in the Jazz Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. One went on to study in Brussels, the other in Oslo, and yet they ended up becoming each other’s most important music companions.

Béla Bartók and Polish culture will be central elements of the Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival held between Oct. 7 and 23, the head of the organising committee said. The festival, the largest of its kind in central and eastern Europe, will also feature events commemorating the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet revolution, Csaba Káel said.
