Slovak Police Arrive In Budapest To Help Patrol Hungary-Serbia Border

Twenty-five police officers sent from Slovakia at Hungary’s request to help patrol the border with Serbia were welcomed at a ceremony in Budapest. Interior ministry state secretary Károly Kontrát said at the event that Hungary and Slovakia shared the same view and acted together in response to illegal migration.

The number of home building permits issued in Hungary in the first half of 2016 rose by 137.2% year-on-year to 13,236, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reports. The number of home building permits issued in Budapest rose by 190.5% to 3,745. In county seats and cities with over 50,000 residents, the number climbed 175.3% to 3,837.

Lajos Kósa, group leader of ruling Fidesz, has referred to the recent terrorist attacks as “the failure of integration” of migrants. Speaking on public news television M1, Kósa argued that the attacks were committed by second or third generation immigrants, and insisted that though “migration does not equal terrorism, the two are closely related”.

Ride-hailing service Uber says that although its services in Hungary are being suspended indefinitely from July 24, the company intends to continue working with decision makers on amending passenger transport regulations. If regulations change – which would be up to lawmakers – Uber could resume its operations.

Companies and individuals paid Ft 1.2 trillion in excess tax in the first quarter, Magyar Idõk reports. More than 90% of the overpayments were made by companies, with VAT and corporate tax leading the way. Some 370,000 companies and 1.6 million individuals paid more tax than they should have.

The plenary session of parliament initiated by the opposition to debate the contested Liget project has been abandoned for lack of a quorum. Wednesday’s session was convened by the parliamentary speaker to debate the initiative of the co-leader of the Dialogue for Hungary party, Tímea Szabó, who wants the law that greenlighted the contested Liget project in City Park to be scrapped.
