The 23rd Budapest Pride Festival of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer community opened on Friday night. This year’s LGBTQ festival is the first to go on for a full month until July 8, with the gay Pride March taking place on July 7.

Hungary’s equal opportunity authority has fined a Budapest sports centre 1 million forints (EUR 3,300) for refusing to allow members of an LGBTQ organisation to rent part of its swimming pool on the grounds of the sexual orientation and gender identity of its members.

Saturday’s Budapest Pride march will be secured by fencing off its entire route, the police said in a statement on Thursday. The march organiser Rainbow Mission Foundation said earlier in the day that the LGBTQ community were against the use of fences.
