Constitution Amended To Create ‘State Of Terror Emergency’

The government can suspend civil rights and property rights and assume other powers if two-thirds of Parliament agrees that a “state of terror emergency” exists, under a Constitutional amendment passed today. The amendment allows the government to mobilize the army and public administration for up to 15 days, even without parliamentary approval.

Whisky Robber Shooting Begins

Director Nimród Antal will begin shooting a feature film on Attila Ambrus, who has come to be known as the whisky robber, on June 11. The Hungarian National Film Fund will subsidise the film to the tune of Ft 1.1 billion. It will be shot in 130 locations for seventy days but does not yet have a title.

A full-fledged witch hunt is taking place in Hungary against a not-at-all favorite son, George Soros. Two weeks ago I already wrote a post on the Orbán government’s reaction to the less than flattering remarks of Bill Clinton about Poland and Hungary, two countries that decided that “democracy is too much trouble [and] they want Putin-like leadership.”

Annual May Museums’ Festival features 120 Hungarian museums which will bring along presentations about their museums to the courtyard of the National Hungarian Museum for two days. Many of museums’ presentation run free workshops or “feel and touch” exhibitions. The one of Military museum is an absolute hit every year not only among youngsters but among adults as well.

In France there are around 12,000 horse races a year, the UK averages around 10,000, and in Scandinavia 'harness racing' is huge. And here in Budapest? Not all expats know about the opportunity to enjoy a day or two at the races most weekends, as Kincsem Park hosts harness racing on the Saturday and flat racing on the Sunday.
