When & Where to See the Northern Lights in Hungary
Hungary has started to offer a rare chance to witness the Northern Lights, a spectacle many once thought exclusive to far-northern regions. Recent years have brought occasional breath-taking displays of the Aurora Borealis here, fascinating sky watchers with shimmering colours lighting up the night sky.

Though sightings remain infrequent and unpredictable, with the right conditions, both locals and visitors may catch this magical phenomenon.

The Northern Lights in Hungary appear primarily during periods of heightened solar activity. This includes strong geomagnetic storms and major solar flares, which can sometimes be forecasted hours or days in advance.

The current peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle, stretching from 2024 to 2026, raises the chances of these auroras reaching lower latitudes like Hungary. Optimal viewing requires clear, cloudless nights with little light pollution, typically between 9 PM and 2 AM.

Ideal spots to catch the lights include Northern Hungary’s mountainous regions such as the Börzsöny, Mátra, Bükk, and Zemplén ranges, as well as the open, dark plains of the Great Hungarian Plain with national parks like Hortobágy. Elevated areas around Lake Balaton and the Bakony Hills, plus the calm Tisza Lake region, also provide good vantage points free from city lights.

This increase in sightings is linked to the sun’s active phase producing more solar flares and geomagnetic storms, occasionally pushing the auroral boundary further south.

A striking recent example was on November 11 and 12, 2025, when a powerful solar flare triggered a vivid aurora visible across northern Hungary, with observers capturing green and purple hues streaking the skies.

For those hoping to see this rare spectacle, it is best to monitor solar activity forecasts and choose completely dark locations facing north.

Bringing a camera can help capture faint colors invisible to the naked eye, and patience is key, as auroras can intensify and fade quickly. While Hungary is not a typical aurora hotspot, the years 2024 to 2026 offer exceptional opportunities to enjoy this natural wonder closer to home.
