The Socialist party has started collecting signatures for a petition against building a museum quarter in Budapest’s Városliget (city park). The ruling Fidesz majority in parliament decided on Tuesday to nationalise the park with a view to building “monumental buildings”, Csaba Horváth, the Socialist mayoral candidate, told MTI.

Lately I have been struck by the high number of incidents, often resulting in death, involving relatives or people living in the same household. A daughter kills her mother, an 85-year-old former high-ranking police officer kills his 79-year-old wife, a professional soccer player kills his partner and her son in a family dispute. These are only three cases I remember from the last two weeks or so.

What can one say about the newly introduced ethics textbook for Hungarian fifth graders? For starters, it is not, strictly speaking, an ethics text. Ethics is not a branch of religion, and being ethical is not the same as following the law or adhering to societal norms. So a textbook that lauds religious virtues and advocates unquestioning civil obedience doesn’t belong in an ethics class.
