"The Central Investigative Prosecutors Office on Wednesday filed charges against Socialist former deputy mayor Miklos Hagyo and 14 associates, alleging misuse of funds at Budapest public transport company BKV. The indictment states that Hagyo founded and ran a criminal organisation involving top and medium-level BKV executives which cost the BKV Ft 1.5 billion from January 2007 to August 2008.

"Bank deposits are protected and safe, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared on Friday in reaction to reports that the government planned to seize individuals’ savings. "The dates for changing excise taxes on tobacco will change from May and November to February and July, under a bill passed by Parliament on Monday. The MPs approved a tax rise of Ft 50-60 per packet of cigarettes, a higher figure than earlier planned, to take effect February 1. A further Ft 15 will be added to the price due to the rise in VAT.
