During the famous ping-pong diplomacy of the 1970s, the People’s Republic of China and the US exchanged visits by table tennis players to pave the way for improved relations between the two countries. In a slight modification of the original model, Hungary is sending an axe murderer to follow up on previous improvements in the country’s relationship with gas-rich Azerbaijan.

Commentators argue that the left-of-centre opposition in Hungary is fragmented, and despite some hopes to the contrary, LMP and MSZP remain unlikely allies. Civic organizations offer no alternatives. They have also failed to perform well in condemning the diplomatic blunder caused by the transfer of a convicted Azeri murderer to his home country.

Last Sunday saw the start of the 15th Jewish Summer Festival – one of Budapest’s most 'prestigious annual programmes of cultural events'. Every year the festival attracts tens of thousands of local visitors and tourists to the capital and its synagogue, which is said to be one of Europe’s most beautiful. The Hungarian Government has also provided funding for this programme of cultural events.

On 4-5 October 2012 the Hungarian capital will host the first follow-up conference to the 2011 London Conference on Cyberspace. The event, taking place in the heart of Budapest, will gather together nearly 600 representatives from government, the private sector, civil society and the scientific community, as well as around 100 international journalists.
