Sándor Pintér, Hungary’s interior minister, and Israeli ambassador to Hungary Ilan Mor handed over Israel’s Righteous Among the Nations honours to Hungarians helping Jews during WWII, at a ceremony in Budapest. In his address at the ceremony, Pintér voiced the Hungarian state’s commitment to protecting each of its citizens from “murderous intent, external enemy or internal treason”.

The national flag was hoisted with full military honours at Kossuth Square in front of Hungary’s Parliament building in Budapest on Tuesday morning on the anniversary of the 1948-49 Revolution and War of Independence and the Memorial Day for the Martyrs of Arad. Hungary’s flag will remain at half-mast throughout the national day of mourning as a sign of respect.

Hungary will host the first East Central European world music expo Womex on October 21-25, it was announced yesterday. Human Resources Ministry state secretary Péter Hoppál told a press briefing at the Palace of Arts that the festival will have an appropriate home in the country of Bartók and Kodály. The government is granting Ft 300-350 million to the event.
