Parliament voted through a package of changes to the 2013 criminal code on Tuesday, and among the amendments is a provision for allowing people serving real life sentences the right to plea clemency. The amendments were passed by 125 votes in favour and 54 abstentions, while one voted against the justice minister’s bill.

Parliament has approved an amendment to the criminal code to prevent the lapse of statutory punishments for sexual crimes towards minors. Under the motion submitted by ruling Fidesz, statutory punishments with a sentence of more than five years for sexual crime committed against a person younger than 18 at the time of the crime will not lapse.

Commenting on the results of the municipal elections, the leading left-wing daily calls for a complete overhaul of the Left in order to stop the emergence of what it calls a totalitarian one-party system. The leading pro-government daily points out that the Left managed to increase its support slightly within the new electoral system which it often called illegitimate and biased.

Fidesz was again the big winner in Sunday’s local elections, with Jobbik claiming second place, as the ruling party retained control of all 19 county councils as well as Budapest and most of its districts. The left-wing parties were able to mayoralties in only a few places while Jobbik was second in almost every county. LMP candidates won a few seats on local councils.
