Glory/Paron allow the dancers’ bodies to come together in various modes of symbiosis, either fluid or tense, expansive or minimalistic but always with the particular quality of “in between” that demonstrates mastery and quality of movement.
Andonis Foniadakis’ love for virtuosity is amply demonstated in these two pieces. Every gesture and step is calculated with utmost accuracy supported by Haendel’s and Philip Glass’ music.
In Glory, commissioned for the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, the choreographer’s urgent and physical expressivity once again falls into step with a great master of the Baroque. George Frideric Handel’s music provides Glory with much more than a simple illustration of the choreographer’s work.
Thanks to Julien Tarride’s stylish remastering of well-loved Handel compositions, Foniadakis’ dance is to be listened to, as much as it is to be watched. The precise, lively rhythms of Handel’s music, particularly the instrumental works, are a constant test of the dancers’ skill.
