- Museum of Illusions in Budapest
Providing a diverting morning for visitors of all ages, the Museum of Illusions can be found in the heart of Budapest.
Initiated in Zagreb and since taken around the world, the Museum of Illusions is the ideal attraction for all the family. Initially promoting the concept of edutainment, offering visitors a combination of education and entertainment, Croatian founders Roko Živković and Tomislav Pamuković hit upon something that is both fun and informative.
Since then, it has expanded rapidly, currently operating in nearly 50 locations around the world, including Toronto, New York, Dubai, Chicago Dubai, Athens, Vienna, Paris, Madrid and Istanbul. It has become the largest chain of private museums in the world.
The franchise model proved to be the best solution, because of all the challenges when starting up a museum in a foreign country. The one in Budapest duly opened a couple of years ago.
The Museum of Illusions is not a museum in a traditional sense. It’s a social and entertaining tour into the world of illusions where you can try all the exhibits and, unlike at most other museums, visitors are encouraged to take photos and have fun exploring the exhibits and solving brain teasers that inspire their minds.
The Museum of Illusions offers interactive, immersive and enlightening experiences for all ages. It features various optical illusions, exhibits and rooms, smart playrooms and a smart shop with various dilemma games, brain teasers, puzzles and games.
Those brave enough can jump into the illusion created by the Vortex Tunnel that will drive them crazy, when stepping through a rotating cylinder becomes an almighty battle – even though surface appears to be so flat and stable. You can deform an image of yourself in the Mirror Room, lose yourself in the Infinity room, resist the laws of gravity and size ratio, and take pictures of yourself in every pose possible.
You can also explore an entire collection of holograms, look closer at every optical illusion and observe each installation up close.
Every corner of the Museum of Illusions is accompanied by a rational and scientific explanation that allows you to learn all there is to know about our vision and its extraordinary capacities, our perception and the functioning of our intellect. The goal here is to discover why our eyes perceive things that are incomprehensible to our brain.
These are such a brilliant, playful reminder that our assumptions about the world we perceive are often nothing but a spectre of illusion.
Before you leave, don’t forget to visit the playroom with intriguing and educational games and puzzles.
Open Mon-Thur & Sun 10am-7pm, Fri-Sat 10am-8pm.
