Mesterházy Welcomes The Socialist Victory In Sopron, Hungary
The Socialist victory in the Sopron local council by-election on Sunday is a psychologically impor-tant one, as it proves that Fidesz can be beaten with a good candidate and a realistic platform, party president Attila Mesterházy told a Monday press conference.

The victory is of national significance, he con-tinued, as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán can no longer say abroad and to his own MPs that Fidesz has won every by-election since the change of government.

The Socialist-backed candidate won a may-oral election in Dunaföldvár on September 30, in a two-way contest with a Fidesz nominee.
