Hungary's Prime Minister Meets Students’ Delegation
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met a delegation of secondary school and university students on Saturday, 15 December. The students put forward their opinion on the situation and future of higher education in Hungary. In the afternoon the Prime Minister also had meetings with several members of the Government.

In a video message published on his Facebook page, Mr. Orbán summarised the position he had arrived at after the day’s talks. He said that a simple, transparent system is needed, because the current one has induced mistrust and unpredictability. With such an aim in mind, the Government will submit a new proposal next week.

The Prime Minister said that the Government understands the students’ concerns on the regulatory quota system, and therefore he made an assurance that in the amended proposal this would be eliminated. He stressed that tertiary education shall remain free for those students who aim to study and work in Hungary and who attain the necessary academic requirements (240 points in the current system). He also emphasised that the legislative changes will not affect students who have already started their university studies this year.

The Minister of State for Human Resources responsible for education will include the abovementioned elements in a new proposal that will be discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
