Socialists Ask Hungary's President About 2014 Election Date
The opposition Socialist Party has asked President János Áder to “make it clear” if he does indeed intend to consult the political parties before he selects a date for next year’s general elections or ruling Fidesz “has made that decision already”.

In a letter to the president Socialist leader Attila Mesterházy referred to his latest meeting with Áder, in which the president had proposed consultations with the parties before setting a date.

But remarks by government politicians “suggest that they are familiar with that date already,” Mesterházy said. In the past few weeks, a Christian Democratic deputy and a Fidesz lawmaker suggested that the election would be held on April 6 next year. Mesterházy insisted that knowing the date of the election was crucial, and in this case it would benefit the ruling parties in planning their election campaign.

The Socialist politician called on Áder to officially announce the date “rather than keep floating it” if it has indeed been selected, so that the opposition parties can work on their campaigns accordingly.
