New Site Launched On Danube Swabian Diaspora In Hungary
With the cooperation of German, Romanian and Hungarian museums, a new website was launched this week on the life and history of Swabian communities along the Danube. Project manager Tamás Szalay told a press conference in Pécs that the initiative aimed to strengthen cultural, historical and economic ties between the German diaspora and Hungary, Romania and Serbia.

German communities might be interested in revisiting these locations, which would boost tourism. The project aims to present the so-called Donau-Schwaben, who migrated from Southern Germany to set foot along the river Danube in the 18th century and developed a distinctive cultural heritage.

Some 400,000 Swabians moved to settle in the Kingdom of Hungary.

After the WWII, these large German communities were forced to leave their homes and return to Germany, mostly to the land of their ancestors, Baden-Württemberg.
