Romanian Border Guards Responsible For Skimming Migrants To Hungary
- 28 Jan 2014 8:00 AM
Earlier, the Hungarian Interior Ministry’s National Defence Service launched an investigation in connection with a report by the British Mail on Sunday, alleging that Hungarian border guards took money from migrant Romanians on Jan. 3. The guards were alleged to have demanded “a fee” of 300 euros, according to the Jan. 4 report by the British paper.
The guards stand accused of threatening to hold up the Romanians for 12 hours, searching luggage and examining vehicle documents unless they paid the “fee”, the paper added. News portal nol.hu reported on Monday that the incident happened at the Nagylak border station, where passport checks are carried out jointly by the Hungarian and Romanian authorities.
It can be seen from a subsequent CCTV recording that Hungarian border guards carried out their duties without any evidence of money being handed over while it can be seen that a Romanian bus driver made a handover to the Romanian guards.
A spokesman for the ministry has declined to comment on the details of the case, saying the Hungarian authorities had made the CCTV recording available to the Romanians on Jan. 17.
