Ever wondered what an ancient carnival would look like? Just 40 kilometers from Farmotel Stefania the historic town of Mohács hosts the UNESCO-protected Busó festival. It marks the end of winter, featuring ‘Busós’, frightening-looking costumed people, most of men, wearing wooden masks and big woolly cloaks.
The annual festival also includes folk music, parades, boat ceremony on the Danube river. There is also a children costume contest, a display ofart of mask carvers and other craftspeople.
Hundreds of Busós will arrive in rowboats on the Danube for a march through the city accompanied by decorated horse-carts. Don’t miss the bonfire in the town’s central square, feasts and music throughout the area.
The ‘Busós’ people are linked to the Croatian minority in Mohács.
