Hungary’s Former PM Gyurcsány Calls On Orbán To Give Up Paks Upgrade Plans
Opposition Democratic Coalition leader Ferenc Gyurcsány has called on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to give up “a diabolically dangerous plan” of linking Hungary’s future in energy matters to Russia. Gyurcsány said in an open letter that there were some shocking similarities between the events of 1956 in Hungary, 1968 in Czechoslovakia, 2008 in Georgia and 2014 in Ukraine.

During the Russia-Georgia war in 2008, Orbán sharply condemned Russian aggression and the current events in Ukraine perfectly justify his views from six years ago, he said.

“Let’s put aside our debates about whether nuclear energy is a wise decision and whether we can tell today what type of energy Hungary will need in twenty years and if Hungary made a good deal with Russia in economic terms,” the letter said.

Gyurcsány asked Orbán to reconsider whether Hungary’s future in energy matters should be tied to Russia, a country that goes beyond exercising economic pressure and does not shy away from applying military force in order to enforce its interest.
