- 6 Jan 2025 12:20 PM
A highlight of the well-attended tournament was Neil Robertson’s incredible performance right before that final, as he scored a maximum 147-point break during the bronze medal match.
The afternoon session on Sunday also delivered entertaining and lively frames, including a winning streak by finalist Barry Hawkins. Following two victories on Saturday, Hawkins defeated 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy 4-2.
From a Hungarian perspective, the standout moment was Bulcsú Révész’s match against 2010 world champion Neil Robertson. Révész, Hungary’s first professional snooker player, managed to recover from a 1-3 deficit to secure a draw, which earned him a spot in the final.
The evening session began with the bronze medal match at the Gerevich Aladár National Sports Hall, played in a best-of-three frames format. Despite Shaun Murphy’s 2-1 victory, the full-house crowd was captivated by Neil Robertson’s maximum break. The Australian stole hearts with his 147, accomplished in flawless fashion - Robertson effortlessly cleared the table without mistakes to raise the roof as the crowd went wild.
This was not the first pro maximum break in Budapest; in May 2018, during the predecessor of this invitational event, Murphy achieved two 147s’. This Saturday, Hawkins also managed the feat during the group stage of this tournament.
The final was played in a best-of-nine frames format, and was less about spectacular shots and more about a hard-fought frames. Junior world champion Bulcsú Révész seemed confident as he faced the 45-year-old Englishman Barry, even though Hawkins had beaten Révész 5-1 in their group stage encounter.
This time the match proved far closer, with the 18-year-old Hungarian crowd favorite leading 2-1 at the mid-session interval, demonstrating excellent safety play to match his more experienced opponent. However, he fell short in break-building, allowing Hawkins to claim a 5-3 victory.
Good hearted Hawkins sealed his win with a remarkable 123-point break to end this outstanding weekend of snooker in Budapest with fine style and grace.
