Hungarian Prototype Trains Fail To Meet EU Rules
- 10 Sep 2014 9:00 AM
Designers of a Hungarian prototype train will have to go back to the drawing board after EU inspectors found problems with wheelchair access and carriage steps. MÁV, the state-owned rail company, wants to make new InterCity train carriages.
But the prototypes flout European Union rules on access for disabled people, Népszabadság daily said. The company’s passenger unit MÁV-Start built the trains at a cost of 1.4 billion forints (EUR 4.4m).
The company insists it will not have to repay its EU subsidy of 462 million forints for making the carriages.
