Strasbourg Court Rejects Hungarian Government Appeall Over Church Law
The European Court of Human Rights has rejected an appeal by the Hungarian government to a verdict on the Hungarian church law.

The Strasbourg court upheld its ruling of April 8 in favour of nine small religious communities who complained that their right to free assembly and association had been curtailed when Hungary’s new church law stripped them of their church status.

The ruling of first instance states that the churches are entitled to compensation, the amount of which must be negotiated between the government and the churches after the decision becomes final, the Court said.

The Hungarian Constitutional Court annulled the church law last year.
