Semjén Suspects Opposition Behind Foreign Criticism Of Hungary’s Govt
Critical voices in Europe and in the United States are fuelled by Hungary’s opposition parties, Zsolt Semjén, the deputy prime minister, told commercial HírTV on Saturday. “The leftist opposition does no longer have Soviet tanks, but they are trying to gain more weight through external attacks by various business and political groups”, Semjén insisted.

Concerning the United States’ recent banning Hungarian officials to enter, Semjén said that André Goodfriend, charge d’affaires at the US embassy in Budapest, was behaving “like a nanny trying to make naughty children behave themselves”.

“Hungary is a thousand-year-old, sovereign country, and what he does is not typical of diplomats,” Semjén insisted.

He added, however, that Hungary is not interested in escalating a conflict with the US.

“Cooperation and good ties with the US are in Hungary’s interests, just as well to have fair and good ties with Russia,” Semjén said.
