Xpat Report: British Embassy Budapest Calls To Reform “BurEucratia”, The Labyrinth Of EU Regulation
The British embassy in Budapest drew attention to EU bureaucracy with a symbolic labyrinth called “BurEUcratia” set up on Erzsébet tér on Thursday. The installation was unveiled by British Ambassador Jonathan Knott and Hungarian State Secretary for Economic Regulation of the Ministry for National Economy, Béla Glattfelder.

Its purpose is to present the harmful effects of excessive EU regulations on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and to show that it is possible to improve the situation through co-operation. In doing so, "the United Kingdom calls upon the European Commission and all EU member states to continue taking concrete steps by adopting a pro-growth approach to EU regulation,” said British Ambassador Jonathan Knott.

Béla Glattfelder said: “With our economy largely dependent on SMEs and bilateral trade with other EU member states, Hungary supports the endeavours of the UK and the European Commission in cutting EU red tape.”

“BurEUcratia” was open to the public for three days in order to raise awareness of six of the EU rules identified by the Business Taskforce as the most problematic areas of excessive regulation affecting European SMEs.
