Hungary Welcomes EU Law On GM Crops
Hungary’s interests were fulfilled when a vote passed in the European Parliament allowed individual member states to ban the cultivation of GM crops, the farm ministry said. “It is an especially important strategic interest for Hungary laid down in its constitution also to ensure that its agriculture is GMO-free,” it said.

During talks which lasted over four years Hungary had always urged a solution which ensures an effective tool for imposing a ban on GMO. Hungary played an important role in bringing this agreement about. Banning the cultivation of GMOs will be easier as a result of Tuesday’s decision, the ministry said.

György Hölvényi and Norbert Erdős, MEPs of the ruling Fidesz party, said after the vote that the new law is a great step forward in the fight against GMOs.

As part of the law, protective zones will be created in member states ensuring that no GMOs can traverse borders and enter countries where they are banned, Hölvényi said.

The law comes into force in the spring. It was supported by 480 MEPs with 159 votes against and 58 abstentions.
