Hungarian Police Promise Stricter Border Controls
Stricter controls on the Serb-Hungarian border are not a result of German pressure, Hungarian chief of police Károly Papp and his Serbian counterpart Milorad Veljovic told a press conference in Röszke on Wednesday.

Serbia announced stepped-up border control earlier this week, including new night vision equipment, and will work with 20 police officers sent from Germany.

Papp underlined that Hungarian police are not corrupt and said they are not helping illegal immigrants.

Special police units are stopping Budapest taxis on motorways leading to Austria and have detained several Kosovo immigrants heading to Germany, Népszabadság reports.

Hungary has opened more detainment centres near the Serbian border, Papp said after he met Veljovic in Kelebia, Serbia.

An estimated 23,200 illegal immigrants have entered Hungary from Serbia in the first six weeks of this year, Papp added.

Illegal immigration is not only Serbia and Hungary’s problem, but also that of other EU countries and must be solved together, Veljovic argued.
