Hungarian Socialists Demand Immediate Military Reform
The opposition Socialist Party called on the government to implement a reform of the country’s armed forces with no delay. Socialist MPs Tamás Harangozó and Márta Demeter said that the defence minister’s recent postponing an international aviation day originally set for next year was an “open admittance of the armed forces’ tragic state”.

They argued that the government’s policy of continually decreasing the army and the “tragic depreciation” of its equipment have now led to a situation that “holding a mere show of military technology poses a challenge impossible to meet”.

According to the Socialists, the government must “drop the practice of recent years in which the military is used for propaganda”.

“Billions of forints should not be spent on protocol events, and fighter jets should not be used as a scenery for the inauguration of sports stadiums,” the statement said.

Harangozó and Demeter called on the government to start purchasing new helicopters and replace obsolete military equipment.
