Hungarian Prisoners Awarded Compensation
Almost 40 inmates may receive state compensation because the conditions in Hungarian prisons constitute a violation of human dignity, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in Strasbourg on Thursday. The Hungarian state must pay a total of €541,000 in compensation to the 39 convicts within three months. The plaintiffs had sued Hungary mainly because of the circumstances of detention and lack of appropriate legal remedy. The compensation amounts range from a few thousand euros to €26,000.

The plaintiff’s complaints were that only cold water ran in the cells, there were no separate toilets, insects were crawling in the cells and the prison leadership allowed them to have showers only once a week.

The court took into account the time spent in prison and other circumstances when establishing the amounts of compensation.
