New English Learning Programme For Chinese In Budapest
A growing number of wealthier Chinese families are arriving in Hungary but are have difficulty finding the right international educational options. One school, English school of Budapest, has come up with an original year long intensive English programme to help them integrate educationally, academically and socially.

The popular Hungarian State Debt Fund immigration programme which allows permanent EU residency visas for the purchase of €300,000 of redeemable bonds has just received a significant boost. The government recently announced that, „from 1st July 2016, the new investors of the Hungarian State Debt fund Program and the extended circle of their family members, are immediately entitled to a fast-track, 30 day-long permanent residence (PR) permit procedure."

The Chinese community that has taken advantage of this new scheme is from a much higher income category than the first wave of Chinese that immigrated in the 1990's and so the services they require are more premium.

When seeking educational services for their children, however, the Chinese remain unsatisfied with their current curriculum options. Hungarian schools are not set up to accept such students, and international schools are not equipped to integrate, support, or educate teenaged students whose English is still developing.

This problem tends to be worse with older children who frequently are required to pass an English test as part of their admissions procedure. One international senior educator from an international school commented that, “Social integration, academic preparation and success are all difficult for these students to achieve, as there is insufficient support for older teens to complete academic coursework in a language they do not understand.

They remain socially isolated because friendships have already been formed amongst existing students, and new foreign students lack self confidence in English to establish new relationships."

In response to this need, the English School of Budapest has started a one year intensive English learning programme specifically with the Chinese in mind. ESB's new Director of Education, David Shectman, commented, “Our programme was set up with the specific aim of getting their English language to a level in one year so that students can join an English speaking school and continue learning with confidence. It's a full day programme for the whole school year and starts at the beginning of October. All the children will be in the same situation so their social and academic needs can more easily be catered for.”
