Anti-Olympics Drive Starts Tomorrow
The Momentum movement will kick off a signature drive on Thursday in hopes of gaining sufficient support from Budapest residents for a referendum on staging the 2024 Olympics.

The group’s proposed question has been approved by the National Election Committee and the Supreme Court.

Activists András Fekete-Gyõr and Anna Orosz said their goal with the referendum is to prompt a social dialogue that Fidesz and the Budapest leadership failed to hold before announcing the bid to host the Olympics.

They dispute the official estimate that the cost of hosting the games would be Ft 800 billion, arguing that Ft 2-3 trillion is a more realistic figure.

Moreover, they say, the money would be better spent on health care and education, where the risk of corruption is smaller.

Fekete-Gyõr told Index that the group has 140 volunteers who are prepared to collect the 138,000 signatures required to compel authorities to stage a municipal referendum.
