The prestigious prize was presented to the 18-year-old striker at the Best FIFA Football Awards gala held in Milan on Monday night.
As a player of Debrecen, Zsóri scored a crucial goal with a superb overhead kick in the last minute of a match against Ferencváros, the current champion, on February 16.
“It is a great honour for me to be the first Hungarian to win the award named after Hungary’s all-time greatest soccer player,” Zsóri said at the ceremony.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who did not attend this year’s gala, congratulated him on his Facebook page: “The Puskás Award has returned.
Congratulations, Dániel Zsóri.”
Ferenc Puskás (1927-2006) was probably the best-known Hungarian in the world in the second half of the 20th century, a prolific scorer who captained Hungary’s legendary Golden Team of the early 1950s and went on to establish a brilliant international career at Real Madrid.
The Puskás Award was founded in 2009 under a Hungarian initiative.Ű
