Best Pálinka in Hungary Plus Top Brandy Bonbons Unveiled at Gyula Festival
- 27 May 2026 6:54 AM
Organizers hosted high-profile award ceremonies across the weekend, recognizing achievements from commercial entities, contract distillers, and private hobbyists.
The festival marked the fourth year of the "Pálinka Bonbons of the Year" competition, which drew 128 entries across four categories. Members of the jury noted a significant level of creative variety in the submissions.
The field included 46 entries from artisanal praline makers based in educational institutions, alongside 30 samples entering the category for artisanal pálinka bonbons with creamy fillings.
Because the Williams pear was selected as the festival's official Fruit of the Year for 2026, the 27 pralines incorporating this specific distillate received separate consideration.
The competition also expanded beyond traditional fruit spirits, with 25 bonbon entries utilizing other spirits such as whiskey, liqueur, or gin. Sensory evaluation was conducted by an international panel of 13 experts.
The top prize was awarded to Budapest-based chocolate manufacturer MyChoccy for its "Abricot Épicés" praline, which features apricot pálinka from the Sáppusztai Pálinkafőzde. The audience award went to Meggyeskovácsi-based Choco Chocofive Kft. for "Éjjeli Bársony" (Nighttime Velvet), a white chocolate and vanilla creation paired with currant pálinka, also sourced from the Sáppusztai distillery.
The main "Brillante-2026" spirits competition drew a record volume of entries this year, with 148 participants submitting a total of 1,366 samples. Submissions ranged from single entries by hobby distillers to comprehensive portfolios of over 60 different distillates from larger operations.
The geographic origins of the entries reflected a broad international reach; alongside samples from nearly every region of Hungary, spirits were received from the Netherlands, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Italy, and Australia.
Commercial distilleries accounted for 17 of the participants, registering 129 samples, while the majority of the field came from individual producers, with 977 entries from private distillers and 260 from contract distillers. Grape-based spirits formed the largest category with 394 samples, followed by the featured Williams pear category with 68 entries.
Competition Results and Special Awards
In the commercial categories, the title of Best Commercial Pálinka went to the 2023 Premium Aronia Berry Pálinka produced by Kosd-based Lunczer Pálinkaház Kft. The Sáppusztai Pálinkafőzde earned the distinction of Most Successful Commercial Distillery, following its success in both the distillate and confectionery categories.
The festival also presented the Brillante Design Award for packaging and bottle design for the second time. The main design prize was awarded to the Triumvir gin from the Erős Pálinkafőzde in Jászberény, while a special design commendation went to the whiskey from the Békési Pálinka Manufaktúra.
Additionally, the debut Brillante Signature Award, which recognizes product harmony across content and presentation, was awarded to Lunczer Pálinkaház Kft. for its barrique-aged plum pálinka.
The awards for private and contract distillers highlighted several individual achievements:
Most Successful Contract Distiller: András Fitos
Most Successful Private Distiller: Lajos Kósa
Best Contract Distillate: A 2020 serviceberry brandy by Tibor Kiss
Best Private Distillate: A 2025 Packham’s Triumph pear brandy by Krisztián Cantoriu
Most Successful Contract Distillery: Mámor Pálinkaház from Felsőzsolca
The record participation and overall quality observed at the 26th Gyula Pálinka Festival reflect the ongoing evolution of artisanal distillation standards across the region.
